In June of 2018, the life of 59-year-old William Morse III of Sugarloaf Township, Pennsylvania, took a tragic and final turn. Initially reported as a missing person case, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance on June 11, 2018, would slowly unravel to reveal a story of familial betrayal and calculated violence. Morse was a man of considerable wealth, with a family trust estimated at $7 million and significant landholdings in the Hazleton area. Friends and family grew concerned when he seemingly vanished, leaving behind his vehicle and all his personal belongings. The last known sighting of him was at his home on Hollow Road. A friend, Jeff Bonacci, expressed his conviction that Morse would not have just left without a word, citing their close relationship and the fact that all his possessions were left behind. The initial phase of the investigation offered few leads, leaving those who cared for him in a state of uncertainty and distress. The investigation into William Morse III's disappearance took a dark turn when his son, William Morse IV, came under scrutiny. What began as a missing person case evolved into a homicide investigation. Authorities discovered that in the months leading up to his father's disappearance, Morse IV had conducted disturbing online searches for phrases like "no body, no crime" and "getting away with murder." Following his father's disappearance, he began the process of gaining control of his father's considerable finances, transferring tens of thousands of dollars from his father's accounts into his own. A significant development came when investigators, after executing numerous search warrants, began examining burn areas on the Morse property. This search led to the discovery of pulverized bone fragments. The investigation further intensified after a hunter found a bag near the property containing the son's cell phone and a handwritten confession. The note explicitly stated, "I, William l. Morse iv murdered my father. Period. My mother knew nothing. I bludgeoned him on the concrete, then burned his body." The case against William Morse IV solidified with his arrest in November 2019. He eventually pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and dealing in the proceeds of unlawful activities. In his confession, he admitted to bludgeoning his father to death on the patio of their home, then burning his body and disposing of the remains in various garbage bags that were dispersed throughout southern Luzerne County. The motive, as confirmed in court, was to gain control of his father's multi-million dollar estate. In April 2021, William Morse IV was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for the murder of his father. The case, which began with the quiet disappearance of a man last seen doing yard work, concluded with the grim reality of a son's betrayal for financial gain, a particularly tragic end to the life of William Morse III. Although his body was never fully recovered, the legal proceedings brought a sense of closure to a case that had deeply affected the community.
