In the spring of 2005, a 34-year-old man named Stephen Maurice Ziegler seemingly vanished from his life in Erie, Pennsylvania. On the evening of May 4th, he was seen at Barilla's Tavern located on Weschler Avenue. Accounts from that night indicate that another individual purchased a meal for him, and after paying for his own food, Stephen left the establishment. He was last seen wearing jeans, a dark blue shirt, a dark blue windbreaker with white trim on the sleeves, and a dark blue baseball cap. Stephen, a Black / African American male, stood between six-foot-two and six-foot-five and weighed around 240 to 245 pounds. He had black hair, brown eyes, and distinctive tattoos on his left arm, upper right arm, and abdomen. That evening, after walking out of the tavern, he was never seen or heard from again. The investigation into Stephen's disappearance was hampered from the start by a lack of information and a minimal personal footprint. Authorities at the Erie Police Department found it difficult to track his movements as he had almost no official records in his name; there were no phone bills, credit cards, rental agreements, or bank activity to trace. This scarcity of a paper trail made the task of piecing together the hours and days leading up to his disappearance incredibly challenging for law enforcement. The man who was reportedly with Stephen at the tavern that night was questioned by police but denied having been with him. With few leads to follow and a lack of cooperative witnesses, the investigation struggled to gain momentum, leaving his case to grow cold over the years. Years have turned into more than a decade, and the disappearance of Stephen Ziegler remains an unsolved mystery. His case is one of a handful of unresolved missing persons files that the Erie Police Department's cold case unit continues to keep open in the hope that new information might one day surface. Despite the passage of time, the fundamental questions surrounding his vanishing remain unanswered. There have been no confirmed sightings of Stephen since he left the tavern, and no significant evidence has emerged to shed light on what might have happened to him. The lack of a digital, financial, or social footprint has left investigators with a profound void of information. The overview of this case is one of a man who, after a seemingly ordinary evening, walked out of a tavern and disappeared, leaving behind a lingering mystery and a family and community still waiting for answers.
