In the quiet of a late summer morning on August 25, 1993, 80-year-old Edward Fonder, a retired machinist, vanished from his 11-acre property in Springfield Township, Pennsylvania. This property, which he lovingly called his "Garden of Eden," was a place where he had cultivated wildflowers and placed statues, finding solace after his retirement. On the morning of his disappearance, his daughter, Mary Jane Fonder, with whom he lived, stated that she prepared breakfast around 7:00 a.m. and then returned to bed. She recalled hearing her father get up, go to the kitchen, open and close the refrigerator, and then leave the house. Mary Jane assumed he was simply retrieving the newspaper from the end of their long driveway. When she awoke later to find him gone and the newspaper not brought in, she searched for him before contacting the police around 11:00 a.m. Edward Fonder, who was still grieving the death of his wife of 55 years, was described by his children as being depressed. He had also been experiencing declining health, having recently undergone heart valve surgery and requiring a cane to walk due to two hip replacements and numbness in his hands. He was unable to walk far, certainly not much beyond the end of his own driveway, and was dependent on heart medication which he left behind. The initial investigation into Edward's disappearance yielded few clues. An extensive search of the sprawling property and surrounding area, involving search parties and bloodhounds, proved fruitless. The scent dogs tracked Edward's path only to the end of the driveway before the trail went cold, suggesting he may have gotten into a vehicle. The relationship between Edward and his daughter Mary Jane was known to be strained and fraught with arguments. Mary Jane described her father as having been temperamental and hostile towards her in the weeks leading up to his disappearance. The investigation took a curious turn in May 1994 when Edward's wallet was found in a mailbox in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Its contents were intact, but it had been wiped clean of any fingerprints. When questioned by police in November 1993 about the possibility of her involvement, Mary Jane's response was unsettling; she claimed to be on multiple medications at the time and couldn't rule out the possibility that she might have harmed him without remembering, stating, "I have no recollection of doing anything to my dad, but I do of the dog and cats, I felt like I could kill them." A search of the home, which was found to be in a state of disarray, revealed the body of a dog in the freezer. The case grew cold over the years, but suspicion continued to linger around Mary Jane Fonder. A significant development occurred in 2008 when Mary Jane was arrested and subsequently convicted for the murder of a fellow church member, Rhonda Smith. This conviction brought renewed scrutiny to the long-unsolved disappearance of her father. Investigators discovered that Mary Jane had been collecting her father's pension for 15 years after he vanished. She became the prime and only suspect in his disappearance and presumed death. Despite this, she was never charged in connection with his case. For years, Mary Jane refused to allow police to search the property. Even after her murder conviction, her brother maintained this refusal. It wasn't until the property was sold to a neighbor that investigators were finally granted full access to the land and the now-demolished home. In 2018, law enforcement conducted a thorough search of the property using ground-penetrating radar, but tragically, no remains were found. Mary Jane Fonder died in prison of natural causes in June 2018, taking any secrets she may have had about her father's fate with her. The disappearance of Edward Fonder remains an unsolved case, a lingering mystery that has left a family without answers and a community with haunting questions about what truly happened on that August morning.
