In the summer of 1991, a four-year-old boy named James Dupree Lewis, affectionately known as "Squirt," vanished from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The last day he was reportedly seen was July 27, 1991. His mother, Debra A. Johnson, and her live-in boyfriend, Maurice Marcell Martin, reported him missing on the morning of July 28, 1991. Martin told police that he had left young James alone in the car while he quickly went into a Giant Food supermarket on North Reservoir Street. He claimed that when he came back to the vehicle just a few minutes later, the little boy was gone. This initial report sparked an extensive search by law enforcement and concerned residents, all hoping to find the brown-eyed boy who was last seen wearing a white muscle shirt, blue and yellow shorts, and white tube socks, but no shoes. As investigators delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding James's disappearance, the initial story of a possible abduction began to unravel. It soon became clear to authorities that Maurice Martin's account was not a truthful one. The investigation shifted focus and uncovered a tragic history of severe and ongoing abuse that James had suffered at the hands of Martin. Witnesses, including neighbors, revealed that Martin was excessively harsh with the child. His mother later testified that Martin would subject James to cruel punishments. It was also discovered that child welfare authorities had previously investigated the household for potential child abuse, but the case was closed just two months before James vanished. The accumulation of this evidence painted a grim picture of the little boy's life leading up to his disappearance. In October 1991, the investigation culminated in Maurice Martin being charged with criminal homicide. During his trial, the prosecution presented the evidence of sustained abuse, arguing that Martin had invented the abduction story to conceal a far more terrible truth. Though Martin's defense attorney acknowledged the abuse, he maintained that his client was not responsible for the boy's actual disappearance. In May 1992, a jury convicted Martin of third-degree murder, concluding that he had unintentionally killed James during an act of abuse. Martin was sentenced to prison and was released in 2012. This case is a heart-wrenching story of a young life lost to violence. Despite the conviction, Maurice Martin never admitted to his role in the child's death and never revealed the location of his body. To this day, the remains of James Dupree Lewis Jr. have never been found, leaving his family and the community without the closure of a proper burial.
