On January 28, 2011, a 24-year-old man named Matthew "Matt" James Perry vanished from Berwyn, Pennsylvania, leaving behind a life and a family who continue to seek answers. At the time of his disappearance, Matthew, a trained carpenter, was staying intermittently at his girlfriend's apartment in the Chester County town. He was described as a white male, standing between 5'6" and 5'8" tall, and weighing between 135 and 150 pounds. He had brown hair, often cut short, very dark brown eyes, and sometimes wore a goatee or a full beard and mustache. A large tattoo of the Virgin Mary on his left forearm was one of his most distinctive features. When last seen, he was believed to be wearing a green hoodie sweatshirt, a t-shirt, and sneakers. Matthew's life in the period leading up to his disappearance involved frequent travel between the suburbs and the city. He was known to spend time in the Kensington & Allegheny and Frankford neighborhoods of Philadelphia. He also frequented Center City Philadelphia, particularly around Suburban Station and the Free Library. His affinity for libraries extended to the one in Easttown, near where he was last seen. He relied on public transportation for his travels, often using the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line to move between Philadelphia and the Berwyn train station. His family was aware that he was struggling with a heroin addiction and had made efforts to help him. The investigation into Matthew's disappearance was opened on February 16, 2011, by the Cheltenham Township Police Department. His case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), where his DNA was made available for comparison. Despite these efforts, years have passed without any definitive resolution. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear, a painful ambiguity for those who knew him. He was a son and a young man with a skilled trade who frequented both the quiet libraries of the suburbs and the challenging streets of the city, a life of contrasts that ended in an enduring mystery.
