On the morning of December 3, 1994, a 32-year-old pilot named Wesley Ballard was reported missing from Soldotna, Alaska. He was the sole occupant of a 1965 blue and white Cessna 206, with tail number N5282U. Ballard departed from Kenai, Alaska, on a routine flight to transport mail and freight to Homer. The flight path was intended to follow the coastline between the two towns, a common route for such deliveries.
