In the summer of 1994, a seven-month-old female infant named Annalycia Maria Cruz vanished from the small town of Chiloquin, Oregon. On July 9th, she was in the care of her mother's live-in boyfriend, William Russell Spear, who had taken her on a fishing trip. Annalycia, who was not secured in a car seat, traveled in an open backpack. The last confirmed sighting of Annalycia by anyone other than Spear was earlier in the day when a gas station attendant in Sprague River recalled hearing an infant crying in Spear's car. Tragically, this witness passed away just a few days after Annalycia's disappearance. At the time of her disappearance, Annalycia had light brown hair, blue eyes, and a distinctive quarter-sized red birthmark on the nape of her neck. She was reportedly wearing either blue bib overalls with a light blue short-sleeved shirt and a blue and yellow shirt, or a white jumpsuit with pink animal designs, along with white socks and no shoes. The circumstances surrounding Annalycia's disappearance become unsettling based on the account provided by William Spear. He stated that after his fishing trip, he drove to Clyde's Market in Chiloquin at approximately 5:30 p.m. He claimed to have left Annalycia unattended in the car for a few minutes while he went inside to purchase an apple. When he returned, he said she was gone. Instead of immediately contacting the authorities, Spear drove to the home he shared with Annalycia's mother, Alice R. Fowler, in Sprague River and asked if she had picked up the baby. It wasn't until they both returned to the market and were unable to find her that they reported her missing to the police at 6:19 p.m., nearly an hour after Spear said he last saw her. Investigators from the Klamath County Sheriff's Office retraced Spear's steps but found very little evidence to shed light on what happened to the infant. Due to the suspicious nature of her disappearance, foul play is suspected by police, and their investigation has extended beyond the state of Oregon. William Spear has been identified as a person of interest in the case, though no criminal charges have been filed against him due to a lack of evidence. The year following her daughter's disappearance, Alice Fowler filed a $4 million lawsuit against Spear, alleging that his negligence led to Annalycia vanishing. However, this lawsuit was ultimately dismissed due to insufficient evidence. The case of Annalycia Cruz's disappearance remains an unsolved and heart-wrenching mystery, leaving her family and the community with unanswered questions for decades.
