On a fall afternoon in 1983, a promising young woman named Joan Leigh Hall, a 17-year-old senior at Warrenton High School, vanished without a trace from her small town of Warrenton, Oregon. On September 30th, after getting a ride from a friend from school, Joan was last seen at approximately 2:00 p.m. at the Warrenton Mini-Mart. She planned to buy a soda and then walk the short half-mile to Warrenton Grade School to help her aunt, who was a teacher. However, Joan never arrived at the school and was never heard from again. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a blue jacket, and maroon and white sneakers, and was carrying a blue and white backpack along with a brown purse. Joan, known affectionately as "Joanie," was described as a reliable and responsible teenager with a good relationship with her parents, always making sure to let them know her whereabouts. The night before she went missing, she had achieved a personal milestone by being elected the first female president of the Clatsop County Sheriff's Department's Explorer Post, a reflection of her interest in a future career in law enforcement. She was the youngest of six children and was not known to have any personal problems that would suggest she would run away. Her sudden disappearance was completely out of character, leading authorities to immediately suspect foul play. The community and multiple police agencies conducted exhaustive searches and interviews, even following tips from psychics, but found no sign of the missing teen. Over the decades, the search for answers has continued, but the case has grown cold. Joan's parents tragically passed away in 1994 without ever knowing what happened to their youngest daughter, a grief that deeply affected their final years. Her surviving siblings continue to hope for closure. The investigation into her disappearance has been marked by frustrating leads and changing stories from some individuals who were in the area at the time. Despite the passage of time, the case remains open, a lingering wound for her family and the community. The unsealed records in the case have sparked renewed interest in recent years, with dedicated individuals and online communities scrutinizing the details in the hopes of uncovering a new lead. The disappearance of Joan Leigh Hall is a haunting case of a young life cut short, leaving a legacy of unanswered questions and a family's enduring hope for resolution.
