On February 18, 2011, 53-year-old Margaret Mary Kohler, a resident of Waldport, Oregon, told friends she was going for a walk with her dog, a five-year-old lab/collie mix named Roscoe. An acquaintance reported her missing on February 20th when she failed to return home. The last known location for Margaret was believed to be in the Florence area of Lane County, where she was thought to be hiking or possibly truffle hunting in the Siuslaw National Forest. This outing was not out of the ordinary, as she was known to frequent the area to walk her dog. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being 5'7" and approximately 300 pounds, with collar-length brown hair and blue eyes. A significant break in the case came on March 3, 2011, when U.S. Forest Service employees discovered Margaret's unoccupied maroon Toyota minivan. The vehicle was found parked at the Cummins Ridge Road Trailhead, an area that provides access to the Cummins Ridge Trail within the Cummins Creek Wilderness. This discovery prompted an extensive search of the rugged terrain by the Lane County and Lincoln County Sheriff's Offices, the U.S. Forest Service, and State Police. Despite their efforts, which continued for days, search teams were unable to locate any sign of Margaret. A glimmer of hope arose on March 5th when her dog, Roscoe, was found in good health at Ten Mile Creek, about two and a quarter miles south of where her vehicle had been abandoned. The dog was taken into the care of animal control, but was unable to lead searchers to Margaret's whereabouts. The search for Margaret Kohler was hampered by the challenging terrain of the Siuslaw National Forest, which includes steep and sometimes slick trails. Although search and rescue teams combed the area as weather permitted, no further clues as to her location were ever found. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected in her disappearance. The case remains an active missing person investigation, a quiet and sorrowful mystery that has lingered for over a decade. Her disappearance serves as a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the wilderness and the enduring pain of not knowing the fate of a loved one.
