A journey to America for love and marriage ended in unimaginable tragedy for 22-year-old Leafil Alforque on November 29, 2008, in Neskowin, Oregon. A native of the Philippines, she had arrived in the United States just three days earlier to join her fianc, Scott Napper. The couple, who had met online in 2005, planned to marry on December 6th. On that fateful Saturday, Napper took Alforque to the scenic Proposal Rock, a place aptly named for its romantic history. As they walked near the base of the rock, with an engagement ring in Napper's pocket, a wave estimated to be two to three feet high crashed ashore. The sudden surge of water knocked the petite 4-foot-11 Alforque off her feet and pulled her into the powerful Pacific undertow. Napper turned to see her being swept away and attempted a rescue, but she quickly disappeared from his sight. A bystander on the beach witnessed the event and called for help, with emergency services arriving within minutes. The Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, immediately launched a search and rescue operation. However, their efforts were severely hampered by dangerous water conditions and thick fog. Rescuers scoured the area, while Napper, his own phone waterlogged and useless, called out her name in vain. The intensive search continued for days, but tragically, no sign of Leafil Alforque was ever found. The operation was eventually suspended, transitioning from a rescue to a recovery mission that would prove fruitless. In the absence of any other evidence, authorities concluded that no foul play was involved in Alforque's disappearance. The case is considered a heartbreaking accident, and she is presumed to have drowned after being swept out to sea. Her body has never been recovered, leaving her family in the Philippines with no closure. Her sister expressed the family's profound grief, stating, "My mother is always crying, day and night... Even if she is dead, she wants to bury her body." The overview of the case is a devastating story of a young woman on the brink of a new life, whose dream was abruptly extinguished by the unpredictable power of the ocean on the Oregon coast.
