On the morning of June 4, 2010, seven-year-old Kyron Richard Horman disappeared from Skyline Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. He was a second-grade student, last seen after attending the school's science fair with his stepmother, Terri Horman. Kyron was wearing a black T-shirt with "CSI" in green letters and a handprint graphic, along with black cargo pants, white socks, and black Skechers sneakers with orange trim. He had brown hair, blue eyes, and wore glasses. A distinct V-shaped strawberry birthmark was visible on his forehead. Terri Horman stated that she last saw Kyron walking down the hall toward his classroom at around 8:45 a.m. The last known photograph of Kyron was taken at the science fair that morning, and he vanished within the hour. The alarm was raised later that day when Kyron did not get off the school bus at his scheduled stop. His stepmother and father, Kaine Horman, went to meet the bus at 3:30 p.m. and discovered he was not on it. A call to the school revealed that Kyron had been marked absent for the day. At 3:45 p.m., his disappearance was reported to the police. This initiated what would become the largest criminal investigation in Oregon's history, involving local and state police, as well as the FBI. The initial search efforts were extensive, with hundreds of trained rescuers searching the wooded areas near the school. Despite a ten-day search that was the largest in the state's history, involving over 1,300 searchers, no trace of Kyron was found. A reward for information leading to his whereabouts, initially $25,000, was increased to $50,000. As the investigation progressed, attention turned towards Kyron's stepmother, Terri Horman, who was the last known person to see him. She reportedly failed two polygraph examinations regarding his disappearance. In a significant development, a landscaper who had previously worked for the family informed police that Terri had offered him money to kill her husband, Kaine Horman, months before Kyron vanished. This revelation led Kaine to file for divorce and a restraining order against Terri. In 2012, Kyron's mother, Desiree Young, filed a civil lawsuit against Terri, alleging she was responsible for her son's disappearance, though the lawsuit was later dropped to avoid interfering with the police investigation. Despite the suspicions and legal actions, no charges have ever been filed in connection with Kyron's disappearance, and his whereabouts remain unknown. The case is still active and ongoing, with investigators utilizing new technologies to analyze the extensive case files. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office continues to receive and investigate hundreds of tips each year, and a $50,000 reward for information leading to a resolution in the case remains available. The investigation into Kyron Horman's disappearance is a complex and heart-wrenching case that has left a family and community searching for answers for over a decade.
