On July 7, 2007, 65-year-old Courtland Lee Mumford, a retired commercial airline pilot, vanished from Portland, Oregon. Known by his nickname "Court," he was an experienced aviator with an estimated 27,000 hours of flight experience. In excellent health, Mumford was an active individual who participated in triathlons. The day he disappeared, he was taking a local familiarization flight in his recently purchased aircraft. He was last seen wearing a possibly logoed polo-style shirt, white ASICS tennis shoes with stripes, white calf-length sport socks, and a gold wedding band. Distinctive physical features included a scar on his abdomen and scars on both shoulders and knees. Mumford departed from Aurora Airport shortly after 5:00 a.m. in his bright yellow 2007 Cub Crafters Sports Cub, a single-engine aircraft with the tail number N222TB. He never returned from his flight, and his family reported him missing that same night. The plane, if it had a full tank of fuel, had a range of approximately 400 miles. Despite extensive searches, no trace of Mumford or his aircraft has ever been found. Neither the plane's emergency locator transmitter nor Mumford's cell phone emitted any signals following his disappearance, adding to the mystery of his whereabouts. The official investigation, led by the Portland Police Bureau, has been ongoing for years without resolution. The case is classified as a missing pilot and aircraft. Over the years, organizations like the Missing Aircraft Search Team (MAST) have been involved in the search efforts, believing the wreckage could be in western Oregon or off the coast. They have appealed to the public, including hikers, hunters, and those near the coast, to be on the lookout for any signs of wreckage, such as crumpled yellow cloth or broken tree limbs. Despite these efforts and the continued advocacy of his family to keep his story in the public eye, Courtland Mumford's case remains an unsolved and poignant mystery, highlighting the enduring hope for answers held by the families of the missing.
