In the early evening hours of June 14, 1997, 45-year-old Helena Ann Negrete, who was known to her loved ones as Ann, was enjoying a family celebration in the Gwinn, Michigan area. Having recently returned to her native Michigan from California following the death of her husband, she was back in the familiar comfort of her family. An avid walker who often enjoyed covering miles on foot, Helena decided to go for one of her customary walks at approximately 5:30 p.m. She was last seen walking down the driveway of the residence located in the 2700 block of County Road 456. She was a petite woman, standing between 5'5" and 5'6" and weighing around 100 to 110 pounds, with shoulder-length blonde hair and blue eyes. When about thirty minutes had passed and Helena had not returned from her walk, her family grew concerned and began to search for her, but they could find no trace of her. On the day she vanished, she was wearing a white sweatshirt that had a pink heart and green trim, a pair of light blue jeans with a hole in one knee, and white tennis shoes with blue on them. She also wore a red and black head scarf. Helena was adorned with several pieces of distinctive jewelry, including a bracelet with her nickname "Ann" spelled out in diamonds and another piece featuring rubies and emeralds trimmed with diamonds. Her family noted that she had a stutter and may have been exhibiting early signs of dementia. In the days and years that have followed, extensive searches of the rural area surrounding where Helena was last seen have been conducted, but these efforts have failed to uncover any clues or evidence of her whereabouts. Her disappearance left her family and the community with a profound sense of loss and a multitude of unanswered questions. No one has reported hearing from or seeing Helena Negrete since that summer evening in 1997. The investigation into what happened to her remains open, a lingering cold case that represents the heartbreaking and unresolved story of a woman who went for a walk and never came home.
