Angelo Howard: The Cincinnati Murder Cases

Background

Angelo Howard was a Cincinnati, Ohio, man whom prosecutors once publicly described as a serial killer and the leader of a violent group that targeted drug dealers. The crimes connected to his case occurred during 2002 and involved robbery, kidnapping, assault, torture, and homicide. Prosecutors claimed that Howard and several associates robbed people of marijuana, other drugs, and money, then sold what they had taken for profit. Howard was not arrested for the homicide cases until 2008, approximately six years after the killings. He was indicted in connection with the deaths of four men: Kevin Johnson, Keith Redding, Gino Booker, and Tim Canady. The four deaths occurred on three separate dates in Cincinnati. At his 2010 trial, prosecutors presented Howard as the organizer of a group responsible for a prolonged period of violence. Much of the prosecution's case depended on testimony from criminal associates and alleged accomplices who received or hoped to receive reduced sentences.

Victims and Verified Dates

• Kevin Johnson August 28, 2002 Cincinnati, Ohio: Prosecutors alleged that Johnson was shot and killed during a robbery carried out by a group of armed men. Howard was charged in connection with the homicide, but the jury acquitted him of the offenses involving Johnson.
• Keith Redding August 28, 2002 Cincinnati, Ohio: Redding, a friend of Johnson, was allegedly abducted and tortured in the basement of a Cincinnati residence so that he would reveal the location of Johnson's drug supply. He was then killed. Howard was initially convicted in connection with Redding's death, but an appellate court later reversed that conviction because the evidence was legally insufficient.
• Gino Booker October 16, 2002 Walters Avenue, Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, Ohio: Booker was shot during an afternoon confrontation involving a bag of marijuana. Howard was convicted of Booker's murder at trial. In February 2026, however, that murder conviction was resolved through a plea agreement under which Howard pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of voluntary manslaughter.
• Tim Canady December 14, 2002 Clifton area, Cincinnati, Ohio: Canady was taken from his girlfriend's home by masked and armed intruders, beaten, restrained with handcuffs, and transported in his own vehicle. After marijuana was taken from another apartment, Canady was shot in the back of the head. Howard was convicted of his murder in 2010, but the conviction was later challenged by recanted testimony and claims that another man admitted firing the fatal shots. In February 2026, Howard pleaded guilty to felonious assault against Canady rather than murder.
