Overview
On July 2 2004, Elijah Brown, 21, a disgruntled employee at the ConAgra Foods meatpacking plant in Kansas City, Kansas, carried out a deadly rampage. Armed with two handguns he had smuggled into the workplace, he shot seven co-workers, killing five and seriously wounding two. The attack ended with Brown taking his own life.
Sequence of Events
Shortly after 5 p.m., during a break period following an employee meeting, Brown retrieved two handguns from his locker and entered the break room. He deliberately targeted certain co-workers�some of whom he believed had teased or tormented him. Witnesses quote him saying, �This is what you get for messing with me� and granting reprieves like �You�re good to go� to others.
Victims
- Lonnie Ellingburg, 46, Kansas City, Kan. � fatally shot.
- Travis Nelson, 23, Kansas City, Kan. � fatally shot.
- Ardell L. Edwards, 55, Grandview, Mo. � fatally wounded in the plant; died the next day in hospital.
- Leonardo Rodriguez, 49, Kansas City, Kan. � fatally shot.
- A 45-year-old Mexican national (name not released pending family notification) � fatally shot.
- Juan Ramirez, 44, Kansas City, Kan. � wounded, survived.
- Victor Coggs (Grandview, Mo.; age unspecified) � wounded in the arm, survived.
