On April 27, 1989, a then 30-year-old James 'Dave' Garner was aboard the 42-foot fiberglass fishing vessel, the Legend, in the waters of southwest Cook Inlet, Alaska. An experienced fisherman from Homer, he was accompanied by three other crew members: Richard Wiard, Doug Cundiff, and Mike Barney.
