In the unforgiving waters of the Bering Sea, a tragedy unfolded on February 10, 1991, that claimed the lives of six fishermen, including 30-year-old Timothy Joseph Schmitt of Dillingham, Alaska. Schmitt was aboard the 98-foot steel crab fishing vessel, the Barbarossa, which vanished approximately 30 miles west of St. George Island.
