On April 2, 2001, a then 31-year-old Male Alejamvro Cortez was aboard the fishing vessel Arctic Rose, which was operating in the Bering Sea, approximately 205 miles to the northwest of St. Paul Island, Alaska. The vessel, a 92-foot trawler, disappeared without issuing a mayday or any other distress call. An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon alerted the Coast Guard to the vessel's sinking.
