In the late summer of 1998, a young boy named Kevin Omiak, just seven years old, was in a boat with five adults, traveling across the cold waters of the Bering Strait. On August 27th, they were making the journey from Wales to Diomede, Alaska, a route familiar to many in the region. The group included Emery Omiak, Melvin Edward Kayouktuk, Jason Ozenna, Gene L.
