On November 10, 2005, 62-year-old Glenda Sue Shoptaugh was at the home she shared with her son on Highway 211 in Estacada, Oregon, when her life took a turn into mystery. That morning, her son left the residence around 7:30 a.m. with a friend to go mushroom hunting. When he returned home four or five hours later, he discovered that his mother was not there. Her brown 1985 Subaru station wagon was also gone. Glenda, a woman with blue eyes and graying hair, who was known to collect cans and bottles in the area, has not been seen or heard from since that day. Her son officially reported her as a missing person on November 14, four days after she was last seen. The first significant clue in the case emerged on November 15, when Glenda's Subaru was found abandoned on a forest service road inside Mount Hood National Forest. The location was remote, about four miles from Highway 224. The state of the car was perplexing; it was covered in black mold, the door was open, and the keys were still in the ignition. A Forest Service employee had initially spotted the vehicle but was not aware it was connected to a missing person's case. It wasn't until November 18, after the car had remained in the same spot, that authorities ran its information and connected it to Glenda's disappearance, prompting an immediate and widespread search of the area. Despite the extensive search efforts in the rugged terrain of the national forest, no sign of Glenda was ever located. Investigators eventually came to believe that she was likely never in the area where her car was found. By July 2006, the focus of the investigation had shifted, and authorities announced they believed Glenda was missing under suspicious circumstances and may have been a victim of foul play. It was noted that many people in her social circle were involved with drugs, though it has never been confirmed if this was a factor in her disappearance. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office has kept her case open, but without further leads, the circumstances of what happened to Glenda Shoptaugh after she vanished from her Estacada home remain unsolved.
