In the summer of 2022, a teenage mother and her young son vanished from Portland, Oregon, prompting concerned officials to ask for the public's help. Seventeen-year-old Heidy Hernandez-Lopez, a child in foster care, was last seen with her four-year-old son, Daimer Hernandez-Lopez, on July 11, 2022. At the time of her disappearance, Heidy was described as being 4-foot-10 inches tall and weighing 123 pounds, with black, shoulder-length hair she often wore in a ponytail with bangs. She has a mole on her left cheek and was known to frequently wear a red braided bracelet. Heidy primarily communicates in Spanish and Mam, a Mesoamerican language. Heidy's son, Daimer, was described as being 3-foot-6 inches tall and weighing 35 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. It was noted that Daimer is non-verbal and was still wearing pull-up style diapers at the time he went missing. Authorities shared that when he becomes upset or overwhelmed, he often fidgets with his fingers or shakes his head from side to side. Heidy was often seen carrying her son when they were out in public. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), Child Welfare Division, issued a public alert, expressing that both Heidy and her son were believed to be in danger. At the time of their disappearance, it was suspected that Heidy and Daimer might be in the Portland Metro Area or the city of Woodburn. They were known to frequent specific locations, including the Fred Meyer on Southwest Beaverton Hillsdale Highway in Beaverton and a local Trader Joe's. The Portland Police Bureau is the investigating agency for this case. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by children in the foster care system and the urgency that accompanies any report of a missing child, particularly when they are in the company of a dependent young son. The disappearance of this young mother and her non-verbal child sparked immediate concern from welfare officials.
