On the morning of April 22, 2023, 50-year-old Daniel "Dan" Born, a male resident of Tucson, Arizona, left a note stating his intention to go hiking on the scenic and rugged Mt. Lemmon. This was the last time anyone heard from him. Later that evening, his vehicle was located at the summit trailhead above Ski Valley, a popular starting point for many trails in the Santa Catalina Mountains. The discovery of his unattended vehicle triggered immediate concern, as it was unusual for him not to return from a hike. The initial hope of a simple day hike gone slightly awry quickly shifted to a more serious and urgent situation as the hours turned into days. The discovery of Daniel's vehicle prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation in the vast and challenging terrain of Mt. Lemmon. The Pima County Sheriff's Department, along with Pima County Search and Rescue, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and volunteers from the Southern Arizona Rescue Association (SARA), collaborated in an extensive effort to find him. For weeks, teams methodically searched the area in and around the trailhead, navigating difficult landscapes in the hope of finding any sign of Daniel. Despite the comprehensive and dedicated efforts of all involved, the search yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. The ruggedness of the mountain and the vastness of the search area presented significant challenges to the rescue teams. As time has passed, the lack of any new information has left family, friends, and the community with a painful absence of closure. The circumstances of his disappearance are particularly puzzling, given that he was familiar with the area. The note he left indicated a normal hiking trip, with no suggestion of any other plans. Investigators have been left with very little to go on, and no evidence has surfaced to explain what happened to Daniel after he parked his car.
