She was on her way to meet a male friend, with the intention of returning in a few hours. At the time she was last seen, she was wearing a green skirt and a white tank top. Katelynn is described as a female with red/auburn hair and blue eyes, standing at 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighing approximately 110 pounds. Concern grew when she did not come back as expected and all communication ceased. The friend she went to meet later stated to investigators that he saw her get into what he believed was an Uber to go back to her cousin's house in Oakdale. However, there appears to be no record of her actually taking an Uber that night. The investigation into Katelynn's disappearance has been challenging for law enforcement due to her limited digital footprint. At the time she went missing, she did not have an active cell phone or a bank account, which are often crucial sources of information in locating a missing person.
