In March of 1988, 26-year-old Rhonda Gayle Sansovich was last seen in the Elmira and Veneta area of Oregon. She had a petite build, standing at 5'5" and weighing around 130 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Her distinguishing features included a small scar near her navel and several tattoos: a butterfly on her shoulder, the name "Wayne" on her abdomen, and roses on her chest. Rhonda was reportedly planning to hitchhike to Palmdale, California, to meet her boyfriend. He had recently received a large financial settlement and had promised to buy her a new house and car. The last confirmed sighting of Rhonda was outside a tavern in Veneta, where she was seen getting into a red semi-truck. After leaving Oregon, Rhonda made contact with her mother, first with a phone call from Seattle, Washington, and then another from The Dalles, Oregon. The final communication her family ever received was a letter from Rhonda, postmarked in Omaha, Nebraska, on or around March 7, 1988. In the letter, she mentioned she was possibly traveling in a black Kenworth truck and expected to reach her boyfriend's home in California within two days. Tragically, she never arrived. About two weeks after her expected arrival, her boyfriend contacted Rhonda's mother in Elmira, inquiring about her whereabouts, which was the first indication that something was wrong. Years have passed without any new information or contact from Rhonda. Prior to her disappearance, she had some history of drug and alcohol use and had interactions with law enforcement, but there has been no record of any such contact since she went missing. She also had no driver's license or vehicle at the time. The investigation into her disappearance has been challenging. Her boyfriend cooperated with police, but a previous traumatic head injury may have affected his memory and ability to provide clear information. In 1997, due to the lack of any evidence suggesting she was alive, investigators with the Lane County Sheriff's Office reclassified her case from a missing person to a probable homicide. The case remains an unsolved and deeply felt loss for her family, a quiet story of a young woman who set out on a hopeful journey and vanished along the way.
