In the early autumn of 2023, 32-year-old Chelsea Grimm embarked on a cross-country road trip from her home in San Diego, California, with the ultimate destination of a wedding in Connecticut. She was traveling in her white Ford Escape SUV with her beloved bearded dragon, Roxy. However, her journey took an unexpected turn, and she was last seen on September 30, 2023, near Ash Fork, a town in Coconino County, Arizona. Her family grew concerned after not hearing from her for several days, which was out of character for the usually communicative young woman, and they reported her missing on October 4. The circumstances surrounding her last known days painted a picture of a woman who may have been experiencing some distress. A few days into her trip, Chelsea contacted her parents and expressed that the solo journey was more taxing than she had anticipated. She decided to forgo the wedding and instead spend some time camping in Arizona before heading back to California. She advised her parents that she might be without cell service for a period. Prior to her last sighting, there were a few encounters that caused some concern. She had met with a friend in Phoenix but then canceled their lunch plans for the following day. Later, she was reportedly disoriented at a motel in Seligman where she attempted to pay for a room with euros, expressing a desire to stay "off the grid." She also had an interaction with a police officer in Williams, near a cemetery, where she explained she had become emotional while working on a photography project about fallen soldiers. The last confirmed sighting of Chelsea was on September 30th, when a woodcutter saw her with her vehicle on a forest service road. He spoke with her, and she indicated that she was taking photographs and did not require any assistance. On October 5, her Ford Escape was discovered abandoned by hunters on Forest Service Road 6 in the Kaibab National Forest. The vehicle was locked, had two flat tires, and while some of her belongings like her camera were inside, her wallet, phone, sleeping bag, and her pet bearded dragon were missing. The discovery of her car initiated extensive search and rescue efforts by the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, but these searches did not lead to her whereabouts. The case remains a painful mystery for her family and friends, who are left to wonder what happened to the vibrant and talented young woman who vanished in the vast Arizona wilderness.
