In the late summer of 2021, concern grew for 36-year-old Amber Rae Johnston, a mother of five who was living in Bullhead City, Arizona. Family and friends last heard from her in August of that year as she was planning to travel east. Amber was reportedly set to take a bus on August 16, 2021, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where her boyfriend had recently relocated. On August 19, her Facebook account posted a live video from a bus, but it did not show her face or contain her voice. After this point, all communication from Amber ceased, and she was never heard from again. She left behind all her personal belongings at her Arizona apartment as her loved ones began a desperate search for answers. The investigation into Amber's disappearance was handled by the Bullhead City Police Department and revealed a perplexing trail of her last known movements. Detectives discovered that Amber did board a Greyhound bus in Arizona, but her destination appeared to have changed during the journey. Instead of arriving in Myrtle Beach, her ticket information showed she traveled as far as Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In Winston-Salem, she purchased a ticket to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where her family lived, but she never boarded that bus. Her phone last pinged in Union County, North Carolina, on August 19, 2021, and was deactivated the next day near Charlotte. Adding to the mystery, her EBT card was used in South Carolina by another woman who claimed to have bought it from Amber's boyfriend. Tragically, the search for Amber Johnston came to a heartbreaking conclusion. In May 2022, skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area in Wadesboro, North Carolina, during the construction of a new school. The location was near where a trail camera had captured unsettling images of a partially clothed woman, believed to be Amber, walking through the woods in the early morning hours of August 22, 2021, just days after she was last heard from. For years, her family advocated for DNA testing to be expedited. Finally, in March 2025, authorities confirmed through DNA analysis that the remains found in Wadesboro were those of Amber Rae Johnston. The case, which began with a mother's cross-country journey, ended in a devastating discovery nearly two years later, leaving her family with the painful confirmation of her death, which remains under investigation.
