In the summer of 1969, a teenage girl named Niki Diane Britten vanished from her home in Albany, Oregon. Just a week shy of her sixteenth birthday, on July 16, 1969, the 15-year-old was last seen at the residence she shared with her grandparents. At the time of her disappearance, Niki was described as a white female with brown hair and hazel or green eyes, standing at 5'4" and weighing approximately 145 pounds. Niki also wore eyeglasses. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance were complicated by a history of running away, which led to a delay in her being reported as missing. Her mother had recently remarried and was in the process of moving, and her grandparents, with whom Niki was living, did not notify her mother of Niki's absence for three weeks, likely believing she would return as she had in the past. The initial belief that Niki was a runaway was seemingly confirmed when she made a phone call to family friends in September 1969, attempting to reach her grandparents. During this call, Niki stated that she was in New York, had found a job, and was doing well. This was the last direct communication anyone in her family had with her. In the years that followed, a mysterious letter signed with Niki's name was discovered at her grandparents' home. The note mentioned living with people in a large old house and suggested she might return someday, but needed to do what was right for herself at that moment. However, Niki's mother has expressed doubts about the letter's authenticity, suspecting that Niki's grandmother may have written it to cope with the pain of her disappearance. This uncertainty adds another layer of complexity to a case already clouded by the passage of time. Decades after she was last seen, the case of Niki Britten's disappearance remains open and is actively being investigated. Although initially treated as a runaway case, the report was likely purged when she turned 18, a common practice at the time. The case was officially reopened in 2003 as more information came to light. In an effort to aid the investigation, DNA samples have been collected from Niki's relatives to develop a mitochondrial DNA profile, which has been entered into a national database. Her Social Security number has not been used since she vanished, and she has been entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). The enduring hope is that these efforts might one day provide answers and bring a resolution to the long-standing mystery of what happened to Niki Diane Britten. Her grandparents kept the same phone number and never changed the locks on their home, always holding out hope for her return.
