In the summer of 1988, Keith Reinhard, a 49-year-old sports writer from Illinois, took a 90-day leave of absence from his job to pursue a personal journey of reflection and creativity in the small, historic town of Silver Plume, Colorado. He rented a small shop where he sold matted photographs and worked on a novel, embracing a more free-spirited lifestyle that included an interest in photography and panning for gold.
