In the summer of 1993, a bright and promising 22-year-old woman named Katheryne "Katie" Eggleston vanished from Portland, Oregon, leaving behind a mystifying case that has haunted her family and investigators for decades. A recent graduate of Oregon State University with a degree in English, Katheryne was just embarking on her career. She had recently started a new job as a sales representative for Allnet Communication Services Inc. and on August 2, 1993, the day she disappeared, it was her first day working alone. That afternoon, Katheryne was last seen at approximately 2:15 p.m. in the former Port of Portland building. Witnesses reported seeing her in the lobby making phone calls, and some noted that she appeared "worried and preoccupied." One of her clients stated he saw her exiting an elevator with an unidentified man. She never made it to a scheduled 5:00 p.m. meeting with her supervisor in Lake Oswego, and when she failed to return to the Gresham home she shared with her sister, she was reported missing. The initial investigation into Katheryne's disappearance took a perplexing turn when her silver/gray Volkswagen Golf was discovered by a security guard around 12:30 a.m. the following day. The car was found in the parking lot of an industrial complex, nine miles from where she was last seen. The scene inside the vehicle only deepened the mystery; the car was unlocked with the windows rolled down and the keys still in the ignition. Her purse, containing cash and credit cards, was on the front seat, and her workout clothes were in the back. However, her Allnet work binder and her passport were missing. There were no signs of a struggle, leaving investigators with few clues to follow. In the early stages of the investigation, the Portland Police Bureau considered the theory that Katheryne may have disappeared intentionally, possibly connected to an upcoming court case involving her older sister for tax evasion. Her family, however, has always vehemently denied this possibility, stating that Katheryne had a minimal role in the case and was very close to her family. Over the years, the investigation into Katheryne's disappearance has explored various avenues. Her then-boyfriend was initially considered but was quickly cleared as he had a confirmed alibi. A more recent and significant development has been the potential link to Joel Patrick Courtney, a convicted murderer. Courtney was reportedly in the Portland area at the time of Katheryne's disappearance, and there are some similarities between her case and the abduction and murder of another college student, Brooke Wilberger, for which Courtney was convicted. While law enforcement has investigated this lead, no definitive evidence has officially connected Courtney to Katheryne's case. The disappearance of Katheryne Eggleston is a case marked by a lack of concrete evidence and a number of puzzling circumstances. Despite the passage of time, her family has continued to hold out hope for answers. Her case remains one of Portland's most well-known and enduring cold cases, a painful reminder of a young life interrupted and the lingering questions that refuse to fade.
