In the late summer of 1995, a 38-year-old woman named Eryn Beth McClary vanished from the streets of Eugene, Oregon. On the evening of August 4th, her nephew saw her hitchhiking and gave her a ride, dropping her off near the Jesco Club in the Whiteaker neighborhood. Eryn, a female with red hair and hazel eyes, told him she was heading to a recovery meeting. She was dressed in a distinctive leopard print bodysuit and black knee-length overalls. However, her nephew suspected she might have been going to work as a sex worker due to her attire and heavy makeup. Tragically, Eryn never made it to the recovery meeting, nor did she meet up with friends as planned later that evening. An appointment scheduled for the following day was also missed, and from that point on, Eryn McClary was never seen or heard from again. Eryn was a well-known and liked figure in her community, despite the challenges she faced. She had struggled with heroin and Valium addiction, a battle that began in her early twenties after the profound loss of her father and the subsequent upheaval in her life. Despite her transient lifestyle, which often saw her living on the streets, with friends, or in motels, she had a constant companion in her beloved cocker spaniel, Barney, whom she took everywhere. Her family strongly believes she would not have willingly abandoned her dog. At the time of her disappearance, Eryn had expressed a desire to change her life and had arranged to enter an inpatient drug treatment program. Although there was a warrant for her arrest, she had no history of fleeing from law enforcement. Her sister revealed that Eryn had a date with a younger man on the night she went missing, a meeting that made her nervous. This unidentified man is considered a person of interest in her case. The investigation into Eryn's disappearance was extensive from the start, with local law enforcement, who knew her well, launching a large-scale search. Despite their efforts, all leads eventually ran dry. Over the years, various theories have emerged, including the possibility of an accidental overdose, though many find this unlikely given that her body has never been found. A note left on a missing person flyer suggested she overdosed and her body was left near Fern Ridge Reservoir, but searches of the area yielded nothing. Another theory, brought forward by an acquaintance, pointed to two methamphetamine dealers associated with a motorcycle club, who may have believed she was an informant. The possibility of her falling victim to a serial killer has also been considered, with names like Gary Ridgway and Neal Falls being mentioned, though no definitive links have been established. The case eventually went cold but was reopened in 2014 by a new cold case squad. Despite the passage of time and the official issuance of a death certificate, Eryn's case remains an open investigation, a painful and unresolved mystery for her family and friends who continue to seek answers.
