In the early morning hours of January 27, 1997, 37-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Kathleen Reid was working her shift as the manager of the Grocery Cart convenience store on Highway 99N in Eugene, Oregon. A mother to a teenage son and married for fourteen years, she was described by those who knew her as a bubbly and outgoing person and was a graduate of Thurston High School. She had been employed at the Grocery Cart for about four months and had not reported any unusual or troubling incidents with customers prior to her disappearance. On the night she went missing, she was wearing a turquoise pullover sweater, jeans, and blue and white sneakers. The circumstances surrounding Rebecca's disappearance are harrowing. At approximately 1:00 a.m., just as she was preparing to close the store, a witness who was outside collecting beer bottles saw an unidentified man forcibly leading her out of the establishment. It is believed the man's initial intention was to rob the store. The witness's presence may have interrupted the robbery, leading the assailant to abduct Rebecca. She was forced into his vehicle, a white or light-colored early 1970s to early 1980s model compact or mid-size pickup truck with Oregon license plates. The truck was distinctive, featuring a horizontal blue stripe approximately eight inches wide, and may have had a white canopy over the bed. The suspect was described as a white male in his late twenties to mid-thirties, standing around 5'9" and weighing between 165 and 185 pounds. He had shoulder-length brown hair, a mustache, and facial stubble. Despite the cold weather, he was seen wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, a short-sleeved white t-shirt, and jeans. A composite sketch of the suspect was later created and circulated. A month after Rebecca's abduction, another woman reported an attempted abduction at knifepoint from a nearby grocery store. While a suspect was apprehended and convicted in that case, investigators were unable to definitively link him to Rebecca's disappearance, and he has not been named as a suspect. The investigation into Rebecca Reid's case remains open, but years have passed with no significant breakthroughs. Her family, friends, and the community are left with unanswered questions about her fate. The case serves as a somber reminder of a life interrupted by a sudden and violent act, leaving a void in the lives of her loved ones. The Eugene Police Department continues to seek any information that could lead to a resolution and bring closure to a family that has waited for decades.
