On a summer day in June of 2011, 70-year-old Emma Jean Duncan was on a group outing with her caregiver at the Northland Mall in Southfield, Michigan. At some point during the outing, she wandered away and vanished. Emma, a Black / African American female, was living with dementia and bipolar disorder, adding a layer of vulnerability to her sudden disappearance. At the time she went missing, she was described as being between 5'1" and 5'3" tall and weighing between 115 and 130 pounds. She had brown eyes and was wearing a straight black wig with bangs, blue jeans, a white shirt, and a brown velour sweater. The Northland Mall, once a bustling hub of commerce and a landmark in the Detroit area, was the last place Emma was seen. Her disappearance from such a public place during what should have been a safe and supervised outing is a particularly painful aspect of her case. The mall, which held memories for countless Michiganders, would eventually close its doors a few years after Emma's disappearance and was later demolished, erasing a key location in the timeline of her case. Years have passed since Emma Duncan was last seen, and her case has grown cold, yet the search for answers continues. Her disappearance highlights the challenges and fears faced by those with dementia and their caregivers. A later report of an unidentified woman's body found in a burning, abandoned house in nearby Highland Park was considered in connection to Emma's case. Similarities such as a black wig and blue jeans were noted; however, a significant discrepancy in the estimated age of the deceased has left this lead unconfirmed. The case of Emma Jean Duncan is a somber reminder of a beloved individual who vanished, leaving behind a void of information and a family without closure.
