In the late summer of 1983, a young man named Richard "Rick" Atwood, 25 years old, vanished from the White Cloud area of Michigan. He was last seen on August 10, 1983. When his girlfriend came back to the trailer they shared, she found him and his fishing gear gone. His family officially reported him missing on August 23 after their own searches proved fruitless. The initial search for Richard yielded few clues, leaving his loved ones in a painful state of uncertainty. The first significant break in the case came two months later when his brown 1975 Pontiac Trans Am was discovered at a service station in Grand Rapids, about fifty miles from where he was last seen. The vehicle, however, was not empty; investigators found blood and human tissue inside that were later linked to Richard, along with part of a broken shovel, suggesting a violent end to his life. For many years, the investigation into Richard Atwood's disappearance grew cold, leaving his family with no answers. Decades passed, but law enforcement did not give up hope of solving the case. A crucial turning point came in March 2020 with the arrest of Roy Leando Snell in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Snell, who was 18 at the time of Richard's disappearance and an acquaintance of his, was charged with felony murder and felony firearms in connection with the case. Authorities revealed that Snell was the last person known to have been seen with Richard and had reportedly made statements about wanting to rob him shortly before he went missing. Further evidence against Snell included incriminating statements he had made while in jail years ago and the discovery of his DNA on cigarette butts found in Richard's recovered car. In November 2022, nearly four decades after Richard Atwood's disappearance, Roy Snell was found guilty of felony murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. While the conviction brought a measure of justice and potential closure for Richard's family, their journey has been one of enduring sorrow as his body has never been found. The case of Richard Atwood is a somber illustration of a life cut short by violence and the profound and lasting impact on a family who waited nearly 40 years for answers. The investigation, though long and challenging, particularly without the discovery of a body, ultimately provided a resolution through the persistent efforts of law enforcement.
