On a Tuesday in the autumn of 2012, a 71-year-old man named Tik Lam vanished from his Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home. He was last seen at his residence on the 800 block of Locust Street on November 13th, around 4 p.m. Mr. Lam, who suffered from dementia and did not speak English, had only recently moved to the city from New Jersey. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 5-foot-4 and weighing about 125 pounds, with graying black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a blue flannel shirt, a black vest, blue jeans, and blue sneakers. He also wore a jade, heart-shaped necklace and a Seiko wristwatch with his identification engraved on it. The search for Tik Lam was fraught with uncertainty and conflicting information. There were a couple of potential sightings in the days following his disappearance. One report placed an elderly Asian man, who fit Mr. Lam's description, walking along a highway in the Lower Merion/Tredyffrin area on November 14th, which was more than 13 miles from his home. Another conflicting report came from a driver who believed they saw an older Asian man walking across the Ben Franklin Bridge into New Jersey. This possibility was bolstered by the fact that Mr. Lam was carrying a New Jersey ID card at the time he went missing. Having recently relocated from New Jersey, it was plausible that he may have been trying to find his way back to a more familiar place. The fact that Mr. Lam had dementia was a significant concern for his family and the authorities. This condition, coupled with the stress of being lost, could have propelled him to travel a considerable distance. His family and friends believed he could be anywhere within a 150-mile radius of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Police Department was actively involved in the search, asking for the public's assistance in locating the vulnerable man. Despite these efforts, the trail grew cold. The initial sightings did not lead to any concrete developments, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions. The case of Tik Lam is an overview of the heartbreaking reality that many families face when a loved one with dementia wanders and becomes lost. The combination of his recent move, his inability to communicate in English, and his cognitive impairment created a deeply concerning situation that, sadly, did not have a clear resolution.
