In the summer of 2008, a 24-year-old man named Vernon Cuthbert Quarles II vanished from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At the time of his disappearance on July 31, 2008, he was described as a white male with brown hair and blue eyes, standing between 5'11" and 6'2" and weighing around 140 to 150 pounds. Vernon was known to have a mustache and goatee. He was living a transient life, reportedly moving between Lancaster and Baltimore, Maryland. Compounding the concern for his welfare, Vernon was living with schizophrenia and was classified as disabled. The circumstances surrounding Vernon's disappearance were uncertain. His mother last recalled seeing him at a post office in Lancaster in July of 2007, though there is a discrepancy in the exact year he went missing. He had also met with his father and brother at the Park City Mall in Lancaster around the same time frame, but they could not definitively remember if it was in 2007 or 2008. The lack of a clear timeline and his transient lifestyle made the initial stages of the investigation challenging. His last known address was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, further complicating the efforts to pinpoint his last known whereabouts. For years, Vernon's case remained open, a painful uncertainty for his family. He was receiving Social Security disability benefits, but those payments ceased in 2010, and his medical coverage had lapsed the year prior. The Mount Lebanon Police Department in Pennsylvania was handling the investigation into his disappearance. This period of not knowing was undoubtedly difficult for his loved ones. However, in a positive turn of events, the case was eventually resolved. Information from the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) indicates that Vernon Quarles II has been found alive. While the specific details and date of his recovery are not widely publicized, the confirmation that he is no longer a missing person brought an end to a long and worrying chapter for his family.
