In the spring of 2014, a young mother named Alicia Fox was navigating a troubled marriage in Detroit, Michigan, while raising her two children. Her son, Kristian Justice, was a baby boy, only a few months old, born in October of the previous year. He and his 6-year-old half-sister, Kaylah Hunter, were last seen with their mother on May 24, 2014. The family had been living with Alicia's husband and Kristian's father, Erin Justice, but the relationship was strained, and Alicia had recently moved out with the children. Concern for their wellbeing mounted when Kaylah failed to attend her kindergarten graduation on June 6, prompting family members to file a missing persons report. The search for the young family took a devastating turn just days later. The grim discovery of Alicia Fox's body on June 9, 2014, in the basement of a vacant house on the west side of Detroit, confirmed the family's worst fears. She had been shot multiple times. The investigation quickly focused on her estranged husband, Erin Justice. Authorities learned that in the days following his family's disappearance, he rented a U-Haul and drove it for hundreds of miles without leaving the Detroit area. He also sold his wife's car to a junkyard. Erin Justice was apprehended in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 11 and charged with his wife's murder. Despite being the last known person to be seen with Kristian and Kaylah, he provided no information on their whereabouts. In 2015, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to a lengthy prison term, leaving the fate of his son and stepdaughter a haunting mystery. The years since Kristian and Kaylah's disappearance have been filled with torment and unanswered questions for their family. Law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children continue to keep the case open, periodically releasing age-progressed photos of the children in the hope that someone will recognize them. The family holds onto the possibility that the children might still be alive, believing Erin Justice may have given them to someone. This hope is fueled by the fact that none of the children's belongings, such as car seats or toys, were ever recovered. The case is a tragic story that began with a mother trying to escape a difficult situation and ended with her murder and the vanishing of her two young children. The silence of the man responsible for Alicia's death leaves a painful void for a family desperate for closure and the community that continues to hope for the safe return of Kristian and Kaylah.
