In the winter of 1978, a young couple's visit to a family home in North Wales, Pennsylvania, would be the last confirmed time they were ever seen. On February 25th, 30-year-old Edward "Eddie" Hale Hunsberger and his wife, Stephanie, stopped by his parents' house to get help with their tax returns. As they departed, Eddie's words to his mother, "We'll be back a little later," would hang in the air for decades to come, a simple promise left unfulfilled. Edward, a man with brown hair, stood between 5'5" and 6'1" and weighed between 150 and 200 pounds. The couple's life together was fraught with challenges; both battled a long-standing addiction to heroin. In an effort to find stability, they had moved in with Stephanie's father, Dr. Jay Smith, the principal of Upper Merion High School, in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, in September 1977. As weeks turned into an unsettling silence, Eddie's parents grew worried and reached out to Dr. Smith. He claimed the couple had fled to California, stating they owed a significant amount of money to drug dealers. However, the scene left behind in their absence told a different story. All of their personal belongings, including their toothbrushes and an uncashed income tax return, remained at Dr. Smith's home. Adding to the suspicion, Smith later admitted to cashing at least two of Stephanie's welfare checks after she vanished. Edward was on probation at the time of his disappearance for an armed robbery conviction and was required to attend a methadone clinic, but both he and Stephanie missed their scheduled appointment in February 1978. When clinic staff contacted Dr. Smith in March, he told them he was attempting to detox his daughter himself. The investigation into the couple's disappearance soon became entangled with the dark secrets of Stephanie's father. In August 1978, Dr. Jay Smith was arrested for a series of armed robberies. A search of his home uncovered a large quantity of drugs, which he claimed belonged to Edward and Stephanie. Smith's criminal activities did not end there. He was later convicted, then controversially had his conviction overturned, in the murders of a teacher from his school, Susan Reinert, and her two young children in 1979. While he maintained his innocence in the disappearances of his daughter and son-in-law, police have long considered him a suspect. Over the years, the trail for Edward and Stephanie grew cold. Despite a few unconfirmed sightings in the year following their disappearance, there has been no contact from either of them since that February day in 1978. The case of Edward Hunsberger is a perplexing story that began with a simple family visit and descended into a web of crime and unanswered questions, leaving behind a legacy of uncertainty and the enduring pain of a family left without answers.
