In the late summer of 1980, 74-year-old Loretta Skinner Phillips embarked on a journey from Indiana to California with the intention of staying with relatives. She was last seen on August 3, 1980. More than three weeks later, on August 27, 1980, her car was discovered abandoned near Murphysboro, Illinois, by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
