On what began as a normal Tuesday morning, November 7, 2017, 27-year-old Jerome Deshaun Ezell dropped his girlfriend, Jasmine Hill, off at her job in Lansing, Michigan. The plan was for him to return later that day to pick her up, a routine part of their life together. Mr. Ezell, a male from Lansing Township, was last seen around 10:45 a.m. that day near the 500 block of South Clemens Avenue in Lansing. He was reportedly wearing a red shirt, black jeans, a black leather jacket, and wheat-colored Timberland boots. When the time came for him to pick up his girlfriend, he never arrived. Repeated calls to his phone went unanswered, and a deep sense of concern began to grow for the young father's welfare. His family and loved ones were left in a state of confusion and fear, unaware of the devastating turn his day had taken. As concern mounted, his girlfriend contacted OnStar to help find the 2017 white Chevy Equinox he had been driving. The vehicle was located that evening, abandoned near North Fairview Street in Lansing. Inside the SUV, authorities made a startling discovery: Mr. Ezell's five-month-old son was found alone, still strapped into his car seat. While the baby was thankfully unharmed, there was no sign of Jerome Ezell. An immediate search of the surrounding wooded area was conducted by multiple agencies, but it yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. There were no signs of a struggle found at the scene, leaving investigators with a baffling mystery and a family desperate for answers. The days and weeks that followed were filled with uncertainty as the search for Mr. Ezell continued. For more than a year, the case remained at a standstill, leaving his family in an agonizing state of limbo. The tragic answer to their questions came on December 12, 2018, when human remains were discovered by chance in a wooded area off I-94 in Van Buren County, approximately 90 to 100 miles from where his vehicle was found. Using DNA, the Michigan State Police crime lab positively identified the remains as those of Jerome Ezell. Authorities immediately began investigating his death as a homicide, and foul play is suspected. The overview of this case is a heartbreaking narrative that began with a routine day that ended in a mysterious disappearance. The discovery of his infant son, safe but alone in an abandoned vehicle, sparked a long and painful search that concluded with a grim discovery over a year later. While partial remains were recovered and identified, the investigation into his death remains open, with the Michigan State Police and the FBI seeking information to bring justice to his killer or killers and closure to a family that has endured so much.
