Alejandro Henriquez: The Bronx Serial Killer
Background
Alejandro "Alex" Henriquez was a New York City livery-cab businessman who was convicted of murdering three young females in the Bronx between 1988 and 1990. The victims were 14-year-old Shamira Bello, 21-year-old Lisa Ann Rodriguez and 10-year-old Jessica Guzman. Because of the victims' ages, the similarities between the cases and the fear created throughout the borough, Henriquez became widely known as the "Bronx Serial Killer."
Henriquez was born in 1961 and grew up in the South Bronx. By the late 1980s, he was operating a local car-service business and was familiar to many people in the neighborhood. This familiarity later became important because investigators discovered that he had a personal or social connection to each of the three victims. He knew Shamira, had dated Lisa and was acquainted with Jessica and members of her social circle.
The Murder of Shamira Bello
Fourteen-year-old Shamira Bello disappeared from her Bronx neighborhood on July 2, 1988. Her body was discovered the following day in the Rodman's Neck section of Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Investigators determined that she had been sexually assaulted and killed by repeated blows to the head.
The case initially received limited attention as part of a larger number of violent crimes under investigation in New York City. Police did not immediately recognize Shamira's death as the beginning of a connected series. During the later investigation of Henriquez, however, prosecutors presented hair and fiber evidence recovered from her clothing. They argued that hairs were consistent with Henriquez and that red fibers found on Shamira were similar to fibers connected to his residence.
