Frederick Philip Hammer: Murders, Victims, and Criminal History
Overview
Frederick Philip Hammer, also known as Freddie Hammer, is an American convicted murderer associated with a series of killings in North Carolina and Virginia. His best-documented crimes include the murder of his nephew, Jimmy Lee Blevins, in 2007 and the January 2008 triple murder of Ronald Hudler, Frederick Hudler, and John Miller Jr. during a robbery at the Hudler family's property near Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Hammer was eventually sentenced to multiple terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He later claimed responsibility for additional deaths, causing investigators to examine him in connection with other unsolved cases. Some of those claims remain unproven, so a distinction must be made between the four murders for which his responsibility is established and additional killings that were only alleged or suspected.
The Murder of Jimmy Lee Blevins
Jimmy Lee Blevins was Hammer's nephew and lived in Ashe County, North Carolina. Blevins disappeared on February 24, 2007. For more than two years, his fate remained uncertain. Investigators had questioned Hammer in connection with the disappearance, but Blevins' body had not yet been found.
After Hammer was imprisoned for the Hudler farm murders, he admitted killing Blevins and provided information that led authorities to his remains. Blevins had been buried on private property, concealed in a pit that had been covered with boards. Hammer ultimately pleaded guilty to Blevins' murder in December 2010 and received another sentence of life imprisonment without parole. The case demonstrated that the three killings in Virginia were not Hammer's first known homicide.
