Elias Abuelazam: The Flint Serial Stabber
Overview
Elias Abuelazam is an Israeli-born convicted murderer who became known in the United States as the "Flint Serial Stabber" after a series of knife attacks in Michigan, Ohio, and Virginia during 2010. Investigators linked him to numerous attacks that occurred between May and August 2010, most of them in and around Flint, Michigan. His victims were typically men walking alone during the late-night or early-morning hours.
According to investigators, Abuelazam commonly approached strangers and asked for directions or assistance with a vehicle. When the victim came close, he would suddenly attack with a knife, usually targeting the chest or abdomen. Many victims survived severe injuries, while several died from their wounds. Most of the victims were African American men, leading to speculation that racial bias may have played a role in the attacks.
The attacks caused widespread fear throughout Flint and surrounding communities. Residents were warned to avoid walking alone at night, and a multi-jurisdictional task force was created to identify the offender. Investigators eventually connected the crimes through witness statements, surveillance footage, vehicle descriptions, and forensic evidence.
Arrest and Conviction
On August 11, 2010, Abuelazam was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Tel Aviv, Israel. Authorities alleged that he was trying to leave the United States as investigators closed in on him.
He was ultimately convicted of the murder of Arnold Minor and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Although he was suspected in numerous additional attacks and deaths, prosecutors focused on the strongest murder case because the life sentence ensured he would remain imprisoned for the rest of his life.
