Cherie Lash Rhoades � Alturas, California Mass Murder (2014)
Background
Cherie Lash Rhoades (also reported as Cherie Lash-Rhoades), a former chairwoman of the Cedarville Rancheria tribe in Modoc County, California, became the focus of a tribal eviction proceeding in early 2014. On February 20, 2014, she attended an eviction hearing at the tribe�s office and community center in Alturas, a small Northern California town.
The Attack � February 20, 2014
At approximately mid-afternoon during the eviction hearing, Rhoades produced a handgun and opened fire inside the Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office in Alturas. After expending her ammunition, she armed herself with a butcher knife and continued the attack. One wounded survivor escaped and ran, covered in victims� blood, to the nearby Alturas Police Department to raise the alarm. Officers arriving on scene encountered Rhoades outside the building with a knife and subdued her. In total, four people were killed and two others were critically injured.
