Aaron Thomas McAtee, a 48-year-old White man, was beginning another ordinary workday on November 7, 2023, when an apparently random act of violence shattered the quiet community of Monticello, Iowa. McAtee was working as the meat manager at the town's Fareway Meat and Grocery store, where he had returned after building a long career with the company.
