In the early hours of August 26, 2009, a sense of normalcy was shattered for the family of Ernest Eugene Smith, a 20-year-old Black male from Nashville, Tennessee. Just after midnight, Smith was making the short walk home from a friend's house when his life was tragically cut short. He was fatally shot in a violent encounter that would leave his community searching for answers and his case lingering in the files of unsolved homicides.
