On a crisp autumn day, October 14, 1975, 76-year-old Charles Theis, a retired firefighter from Milwaukee, found himself in the serene woods of Phelps, Wisconsin, with his son, Floyd. The two had been fishing earlier, but with little luck, Floyd decided to try his hand at grouse hunting in the Nicolet National Forest.
