On April 28, 1991, 43-year-old John Mitchell Spear was working aboard the F/V Berta J, a 38-foot longline halibut fishing vessel, in the waters south of Yakutat, Alaska. He was accompanied by his fellow crewman, Michael Lami. The vessel tragically sank approximately 50 nautical miles from the shore, leading to the disappearance of both men.
