On a summer day in Alaska, July 22, 2001, the life of 39-year-old Bessie Hansen took a tragic turn. She was aboard the fishing vessel Lorelle Renee in the waters of Bristol Bay, a place defined by its rugged beauty and the unforgiving nature of the sea. It was approximately four miles north of the mouth of the Ugashik River when the unthinkable happened. Bessie, an American Indian/Alaska Native woman with black hair and brown eyes, went overboard into the frigid waters.
