On April 27, 2005, 11-year-old Leonard Nowpakahok was with his family on a traditional whale hunt in the Bering Sea, off the coast of Gambell, Alaska, when tragedy struck. He was aboard an 18-foot skin-covered whaling boat with five other individuals, including his uncle, Jason Nowpakahok, who was the captain and the mayor of Gambell, and his 11-year-old cousin, Yolanda Nowpakahok.
