On a late summer day in August 2003, 58-year-old Yoshiko Funakoshi and her daughter, Shima Funakoshi, boarded a Cessna 406 Caravan airplane in Utqiagvik Alaska. Their destination was the coastal village of Wainwright, a routine flight over the vast and often unforgiving Alaskan tundra.
